Alexandre-Louis Leloir Drawings: Online exhibition
Charles Ede is pleased to present an online exhibition devoted to the drawings of the French academic artist Alexandre-Louis Leloir (1843–1884).
Although celebrated during his lifetime as a painter of history, genre and portrait subjects, drawing lay at the heart of Leloir's artistic practice. Bringing together more than eighty works on paper, this exhibition reveals the remarkable breadth of his imagination and technical accomplishment.
From finely observed portrait studies and expressive figure drawings to historical and biblical subjects, Renaissance and medieval scenes, landscapes, animals and intimate sketches of family life, the exhibition offers a rare insight into the working methods of one of nineteenth-century France's most accomplished draughtsmen.
Complementing Leloir's drawings is a small group of portraits by his mother, Adèle-Anaïs Toudouze (1822–1889), and his aunt, Héloïse Suzanne Colin (1820–1873). Together they illuminate the artistic milieu in which he lived and worked, adding a personal dimension to the exhibition.
Many of the drawings have remained together for generations and have never before been exhibited.
The exhibition opens online at 12 noon (BST) on Wednesday 5 August 2026. All available works may be purchased immediately on a first come, first served basis using the Buy It Now function on our website.
Unless otherwise stated, all works are sold unframed. Simple black frames may be added to any order for £50 per frame.
