Large head from a life size statue of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet in red granodiorite. The details of her muzzle and mane are carefully carved and the surface preserves the original high polish. Left side defective as shown.
This head comes from a seated statue of the goddess. Some 700 fragments are known from Karnak, the best of which were carved in the second half of the reign of Amenhotep III. The standing Sekhmets appear to have Saite proportions and a uniform matt finish as opposed to the highly polished surfaces of New Kingdom examples.
Provenance
Ex. Belgian private collection acquired in Paris in the 1960s from Depras.
