    The Gallery

Established in 1971, Charles Ede is recognised as one of the world’s leading dealerships for works of ancient art from Egypt, Greece and the Roman Empire, as well as early European art prior to c.1000 AD.

As of 2024 the gallery, returning to the vision of its original iteration as Folio Fine Art, also specialises in Romantic to Modern 19th and early 20th century paintings, works on paper and photography. James Richards has been appointed to assist the existing Directors Martin Clist and Charis Tyndall in realising this vision. The focus will now widen to include, alongside ancient sculpture, British and European paintings, works on paper, and photography from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Gallery exhibits at major international art fairs, has published more than 300 catalogues and sold more than 30,000 objects. Our clients include some of the world’s most important collectors as well as major museums and institutions across the UK, USA, Europe and Australia.

The company remains true to the principle of its founder by offering fully researched and well provenanced material. It is a member of various professional associations including ADA (Antiquity Dealers’ Association), BADA (British Art Dealers’ Association),  IADAA (International Association of Dealers in Ancient Art), and upholds their high ethical standards.

    Charis Tyndall, Director

Charis Tyndall joined Charles Ede in 2013, having worked for the gallery on a part time basis whilst studying Ancient History and Classical Archaeology at Warwick university, where she achieved her BA and MA. In 2017 she became a director and ran the business alongside Martin Clist, until he stepped down as Director in 2023, and was replaced by James Richards. Charis is on the board of the International Association of Dealers in Ancient Art (IADAA) and the Antiquities Dealers Association (ADA).

During Charis' time at the gallery she has participated at TEFAF Maastricht, TEFAF New York, Frieze Masters, The Winter Show, Masterpiece, and the Basel Ancient Art Fair. She has sold to many major international museums including the Metropolitan Museum New York, The British Museum London, the Getty Villa Museum, MFA Boston, Toledo Museum of Art, National Museum of Scotland, Cummer Museum
