Provenance

Jean Pozzi (1885-1967), Paris, France
His sale: Hotel Drouot, 16th-17th November 1970, lot 166

Jean Pozzi was a French plenipotentiary Minister in Iran in 1935 and in Egypt from 1939-1942. Over nearly six decades, Pozzi amassed a collection of over 3,500 art objects in his Paris apartment, ranging from textiles, carpets, and manuscripts to album folios, ceramics, and tiles from Islamic regions and beyond.
First son of
Samuel-Jean Pozzi (1846-1918) a French surgeon, gynecologist, anthropologist and patron of the arts. Samuel-Jean's sexual escapades were almost as renowned as his groundbreaking contributions to gynecology. His distinctive charm was perfectly embodied by John Singer Sargent’s full-length portrait, of him in 1881 entitled Dr. Pozzi at Home, which captured his distinctive charm.
