Carved wood lid from a rectangular box showing a recumbent lion, his head turned to the right, the fore legs stretching forward and the hind legs twisted to the right, the left leg tucked under his body so that the viewer can see the underside of its paw. The tail curls up around the proper right haunch. The lion has a relatively small head, narrow almond-shaped eyes, a wide, flat mouth that is slightly open, and a short-cropped mane. A small horizontal fixing dowel on the back right corner of the base. Ink inscribed labels for Oppenheimer and Paget on underside of base with handwritten notes relating to the Schiff sale.
The front edge of the lid broken away, three fine cracks to the base.
This lid dates to the 27th Dynasty, also known as the first Persian period of ancient Egypt. Stylistically is shows the Achaemenid influence on Egyptian art.
