The slightly concave, reel-shaped pyxis has an inbuilt receptacle in the centre of the bowl and a disc lid without overhang. There are a series of grooved encircling bands including two at the junction of the walls and the base, and a decorative scheme of them on the moulded lid. A band of ivy tendrils, leaves and berries on the upper surface. A very unusual decorative technique has been used on the outer edge of the lid and foot, wherein there are alternative segments of single and double layers of slip, creating a two-toned schema. The underside and the lid's resting surface is reserved, the latter with a red wash. An old collection label on the outer wall with '89'.
Intact, minor chipping to the glaze.

Literature

The decoration is typical of that from Campania, however the form is rare and we have been unable to find a parallel.
