The profile of this piriform amphora flares at the base, has a concave neck and an out-turned lip, three loop handles set at the shoulder. The decoration is painted in a burnt orange-red slip; the shoulder with a scale pattern, the body with encircling bands of varying widths, and the handles, lip and foot in solid colour.
The piriform shape and the scale-pattern on the shoulder both originate in Minoan culture. It is quite possible that this shape has antecedents in metal storage vessels.
